ANTWERP ART WEEKEND ZIJSPOOR

STAND VAN ZAKEN departs from a fundamental question within sculpture: what rests on what?

This group exhibition brings together 29 artists with a distinct focus on sculptural work and the role of the pedestal. Here, the pedestal is not approached as mere support, but as an active element: an extension of the sculpture, a formal component, or an autonomous object in its own right.

The title refers both to the literal position of the work in space, how it stands, what it stands on, and to a more figurative state of affairs: where each artist finds themselves within their practice today. It reflects a moment of positioning, of taking stock, of defining one's place.

Through this lens, the exhibition explores the relationship between object and pedestal, between carrying and being carried, between showing and supporting. Each artist presents a sculptural work alongside a self-developed pedestal, forming a collective constellation in which the base takes on an active and visible role. STAND VAN ZAKEN invites a reconsideration of position, weight, and meaning; and of the conditions that allow a work to appear, to stand, and to be seen.
