BUDDIES

After months of making, building and gathering new work,
BUDDIES opens its doors on 3 & 4 October.
Paintings, sculptures and installations — presented in my studio in Épinois.

In Buddies, Nina Minnebo explores the beauty and depth of the relationship between humans and animals. Dogs, cats and horses appear in both familiar and imagined situations, in an attempt to capture something of their essence and to magnify the deep bond that can grow between a human and an animal.

The paintings are also a way of preparing for the day when these animals will no longer be there, and of saying goodbye to those who already are. Painting becomes a way of coping with loss, but also a celebration of the animals who are still here, of their presence and of the moments we share with them.

Some works imagine the world from the animal’s perspective. If a dog could buy art, what would he choose? A tennis ball, perhaps. Or two sausages in a bowl. Ordinary things to us, but potentially as beautiful to him as flowers might be to us.

Buddies is about sharing a world. They need us to survive, yet we come to need them to live.
