Balayage

Balayage questions where identity resides—whether we are our image, our appearance, or our hair. Drawing on references to children's stories such as Rapunzel and the mythical strength of Samson, hair becomes both symbol and structure, both ornament and burden.

The figure's expression carries a knowing silence. She is aware of the performance, of the seduction and superficiality of appearances, yet she does not resist. Instead, she participates in it—held upright by the very illusion she sees through.

The pedestal and the sculpture become one. The work supports itself, blurring the distinction between sculpture and support.

Balayage was first presented during the Antwerp Art Weekend as part of an exhibition by the artist collective Zijspoor.
